Carl Schmidt for Central Region District Commander

Carl Schmidt to your Base membership.

Shipmates,

I was a Central Region District Commander on two different previous occasions. Regional Director Central Region for two terms. National Chaplain for 3 years. National Senior Vice Commander for 1 term 2 years.

I am currently running for District Commander Central Region 1. I have reviewed all the qualification for District Commander in the Constitution and Bylaws of USSVI. I am asking for your vote, but please vote for the candidate of your choice when the elections open June 15, 2015

Fraternally,

Carl Schmidt ETC(SS) USN Ret.

Old Diesel Submariners

Subject:Fwd: Diesel Boat (USS Chopper)
As a "Old" diesel sailor, my boats were ( Blenny (SS-324), Bashaw (SSK-241), and Barbero (SSG-17), this really put a lump in my throat. It takes one back to  when he was young, full of pee and vinegar, and indestructible. Thanks to Charlie Steed for passing it along.

This is a Super 8 video shot aboard USS Chopper in the late 50s by Phil Worful, now on eternal patrol. Shipmate Fred Hasle had it converted to DVD and gave it to me to share.
Youse guys with diesel oil running in your veins will like this. Try not to drool all over the keyboard.

This is about 16 mins in length.  The Chopper as I remember was stationed in Key West.  Tommy Cox is the singer and the songs are repeated but should bring back happy thoughts from the OLD Days…  There one shot that shows a TM loading a torpedo with shined shoes….That I don’t believe.    KingBing sends

SUBMARINES AND HELICOPERS

Melvin T. Smith SOMC served on submarines for sixteen years and five years  with the Antisubmarine Defense Force - Hunter Killer Force. Helicoper Antisubmarine Squadron Seven.
Melvin recieving a letter from John Smith Thach, Commander  Killer Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Mac A. Graham, Commanding Officer.
Others in the photo I have only last names: L-R Sybrwski, Liebold and Mansfield. If anyone can help add to this photo, please let me know.

It was at this time Melvin Smith invented the water telephone.

Everything he did while serving in the U.S. Navy was very interesting. His career alone could fill a book. He did a great job and loved what he did.

In an up coming book, "Submarine Stories of the 20th Century," he shares a story of when he served on the USS Snapper and the USS Sea Fox. He served on four other boats.
