David Farran (Iowa Base)

2014 Candidate for Central Region Director.

 

US Navy 1960 -1966. Qualified on USS Bream SS243 (1961) and USS Scamp SSN 588 (1963).

First joined USSVI in Dec 1985, as MAL.  Lost contact in Jan 1993. Rejoined USSVI Feb 2001 and became a Life Member 12/14/2002.

Served as Iowa Base Vice Commander 2006 and Commander 2006 to 2010.

Created original design for S-36 Memorial Project and with input from USSVI and WWII Sub Vets Members, designed the memorial stone that was adopted. (Same basic design was used at Iowa Veterans Cemetery and at Wahoo Memorial in Wahoo, Nebraska.)

Served as Committee Chairman for the S-36 Memorial Project from 2006 through completion and dedication 23 June 2007. Coordinated Iowa and Placoderm Bases and Iowa Chapter of WWII SUBVETS actions to gain State approval to install the S-36 Memorial at the Iowa State Capitol, Also helped  with the Iowa Sub Vets Memorial at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.

Worked with the Iowa Base of World War II Submarine Veterans to establish the John C Marino Submarine Section in the Library at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Served as Central Region District 3 Commander from 2008 to present.

Chartered USSVI Marlin Base, in Omaha, NE, partnered with the City of Omaha for maintenance and development of the USS Marlin Memorial and Freedom Park.

Participated with Iowa Base in KapSS for KidSS visits at University of Iowa Hospital.

Currently present USSVI Eagle Scout Awards in Winnebago Council of Boy Scouts of America.

Worked with Minneapolis/St Paul Base to host 2013 National Convention in Rochester, MN.

Attended several National Conventions beginning at Reno in 2003 and have attended pre-ABM, post ABM and ABM’s as District 3 Commander.

Inducted into USSVI Holland Club – 2011.

My goals if elected to Central Region Director will be:

Support our Constitution and ByLaws, the National Officers and the USSVI Membership.

Find ways to improve two-way communications between the National Organization and the individual Base Members.

Recruitment: Increase the awareness of today’s Submarine Force and recent Submarine Veterans about USSVI’s goals, purpose and the value of membership. Provide contacts for USSVI members to help them learn what Veteran’s Benefits are available and how to apply for them.
